Field Notes on Blackberries

Blackberries are notable for their high nutritional contents of dietary fibervitamin Cvitamin Kfolic acid (a B vitamin), and the essential mineral manganese.

They rank highly among fruits for antioxidant strength, particularly due to their dense contents of polyphenolic compounds, such as ellagic acidtannins, ellagitannins, quercetingallic acidanthocyanins and cyanidins.

Blackberries have an ORAC value (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) of 5347 per 100 grams, including them among the top-ranked ORAC fruits. Other reports place blackberries at the top of more than 1000 antioxidant foods.

Blackberries are less perishable than other berries and will keep fresh in the refrigerator for up to a week. In addition, they freeze very well and after the fresh season ends, you can purchase ours berries, frozen from our store throughout the winter.   Blackberries make excellent desserts, jams and wines.
